What is a .nfo file?

An .nfo file is a plain-text information file — either a Windows System Information report, or an old-school ASCII-art "release info" text file. Both are just text.

This extension has been used by more than one format

3 different formats have claimed .nfo over the years, so two files with the same extension aren't necessarily the same kind of thing.

How to open a .nfo file

  • WindowsNotepad (set the font to Lucida Console for the ASCII art)
  • WindowsSystem Information, for msinfo32 .nfo reports
  • MacTextEdit
  • MaciNFO viewers that render the original codepage

How to convert a .nfo file

  • Save as .txt from any text editor if the odd characters bother you.
